Panic attacks can lead often times to depression. The reason being is that once an individual experiences a panic attack, he or she will be afraid of experiencing it again. Questions like „What if it happens again?” will be raised. Since there is no answer to this kind of questions, the individual could feel more and more alone and helpless in his/her situation. Over time, this feeling can eaily develop into depression.

A lot of scientists think that depression is in fact an adaptation of the humans to a difficult situation and not a disease, like most often described. In a situation which involves danger, a loss of someone or wasted effort, low motivation produced by the depression could give an advantage by inhabiting some actions.

Anyway, we know for sure that depression is common during illnesses and disorders. We all have experienced depression during our life by feeling discouraged, hopeless or unmotivated, uninterested for different reasons. However, you should know that feeling depressed for any reason for a short period of time is considered a pretty common thing and there is no need to fret.

Once you are experiencing these feelings for longer time than 10 days and these feelings interfere with your normal daily activities like going to work (or school), taking care of your family or children, spending some time with your friends, it is likely that you have a major depressive episode.

The most common symptoms of a major depressive episode are:
- continual sadness or anxious mood;
- losing hope, pessimism;
- feeling guilty, worthless or helpless;
- losing pleasure or interest of activities you like;
- having difficulty focusing, learning or remembering;
- thinking of death or suicide;
- physical symptoms which do not respond to any treatment and for which no toher cause can be diagnosed;
- problems with sleeping: some sufferers accuse insomnia and early awakenings, while other have the impression that they cannot get enough sleep;
- because of the insomnia, restlessness appears, as well as irritability;
- problems with appetite: lots of depressed people are losing appetite, they cannot eat and are losing weight. By some of them, the contrary happens: they are overeating and gain in weight.

Even if anxiety disorder and depression are different, the panic attack and the depression caused by it can be often times treaten together.
The key is to stop panic attacks, and the depression will instantly dissapear, since it was caused by the panic attack and the fear not to having one.
