Even if there are a couple of methods to overcome anxiety or panic disorder without drugs, some people are choosing this type of treatment.
If you intend to take any panic attack medication, you could find the following information helpful.
Generally speaking, we can distinguish six types of medication:
1. Antidepressants: are mainly used to treat severe depression, but some of them are also used for anxiety and panic attack disorders. Since they have numerous side effects, like sweating, sensitivity to sunlight, weight gain, blurred vision or irritation, these medications are not a good long-time solution for the disease.
Antidepressants include: Imipramine, Desipramine, Nortriptyline, Amitriptyline, Doxepin, Clomipramine, Venlafaxine.
2. Beta blockers: are prescribed to control the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as shaking, fast heartbeat. As a side effect, Beta blockers can cause insomnia, decrease of heart rate, cold extremities, but also depression.
Beta Blockers include: Propranolol, Atenolol.
3. Benzodiazepines: can be taken over a longer period of time, reducing the symptoms of the disease in about 75% of the patients. However, the side effects are not missing: decreased mental sharpness, clumsiness, agitation, unrestful sleeping and tiredness.
Benzodiazepines include: Alprazolam, Clonazepam, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Oxazepam, Chlordiazepoxide.
4. SSRIs: work differently to other drugs. This type of panic attack medication is helping the brain maintaining the level of the serotonin. The serotonin is a neurotransmitter found in the central nervous system, where it has multiple functions, including control of anger and mood. SSRI’s, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors are meant for short-term use for specific conditions.
SSRIs include: Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Sertraline, Paroxetine.
5. The fifth type of panic attack medication is the so-called mild tranquilizer. This type of medication is approved for use for anxiety with mild depression and also for different types of phobias in combination with other medicines for obsessive compulsive disorder. The name of the medication is Buspirone. In the first days of use, it can cause headache and dizziness, but these side effects usually disappear after a couple of days. Like the name suggests, the mild tranquilizer is used only in case of mild anxiety or depression.
6. MAOIs, or Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors are a class of powerful antidepressant drugs. MAOIs are reserved as a last line of defense and are used only when other classes of antidepressants have failed.
Antidepressants including MAOIs have some dependence producing effects, most notably a withdrawal syndrome, which may be severe. You should know that it is absolutely necessary to clear your organism completely of one type of drug before start using another.
