Depending on the causes which trigger panic attacks, we can differenciate three types of panic attacks : spontaneous, cued and situational pedisposed.
Spontaneous panic attacks are panic attacks which can happen anytime, anywhere and without any warning. This means this type of attack is not related to a specific place or situation. They happen spontaneously, without any sign that could be understand as a warning. Because it always happens unawaitedly, one cannot be prepared for this type of attack. For this reason, it is probably the most scary type of panic attacks.
I have experienced myself this type of attack and it was a really scary experience. Because it is not triggered by anything (a specific fear, situation or place), an outsider can easily think that the sufferer is going crazy. In fact, I was thinking myself that I am going crazy, because at that point I didn’t know anything about panic attacks and I didn’t know what is happening to me.
Statistics show that lots of people experience spontaneous panic attacks once or twice during their life. It is possible that someone experiences a spontaneous attack only once, but he or she will be so marked by the experience, that a treatment for panic attacks is required to get rid of the fear. Most of them will be afraid not to have any attacks again and as we have seen, this feeling can develop into depression, so it must be treated.
Cued panic attacks are attacks that are tiggered by specific occasions or locations. People who experience this kind of panic are afraid of these situations or places, locations and they never have attacks when these triggers aren’t present. That’s why most of them will try to avoid the triggering occasions, once they have experienced an attack.
This type of attack is much more manageable tha spontaneous attacks, since the sufferer knows what will come in a given situation. For example, there are people who experience panic attacks only when they are flying with a plane. They don’t experience these attacks in other situations. Cued panic attacks can be triggered by an intense fear of something or a particular place. For instance, if someone is very afraid of graveyards, visiting a graveyard all alone might trigger an attack.
Situational pedisposed panic attacks are experienced occasionally in a given situation. Panic disorder sufferers might experience an attack in a situation or a place, however they don’t experience them every time, they only tend to experience them in that given situation. They also don’t have afraid of these places or stances, the given situation is only increasing the odds of having an attack.
A good example would be an experienced panic attack while driving, if the driver don’t has a specific fear of driving. They don’t experience panic every time they drive, only sometimes. At the same time, they experience the attack even if they aren’t afraid of driving or cars. Statistics say that situational pedisposed panic or anxiety attacks can occure often times while driving, but there are also people who have this experience while reading a book.
